Parent FAQ

We are aware that parents will have a number of concerns and questions as they oversee their children’s learning. We hope the following answers are helpful, but please contact the school if you would like any other assistance. 

Can my child come to school?

Yes. The NSW Premier has said that she would prefer students to stay at home unless it is necessary for them to come to school. Parents should make their own decision about whether students come to school or learn from home.

Will students who come to school be doing the same work as those learning remotely?

Yes. Students at school will be supervised to continue with our flexible online learning program. 

How can my child access learning activities while they are at home?

Learning activities for students in Year 3 and up are accessed via Canvas and Infants parents will be contacted directly by their teacher. Junior School parents should be mainly guided by their teacher. See Canvas instructions and ‘What to Do Each Day’ for further instructions. 

Will my child still be learning via a Biblical framework?

Yes. All curriculum at Covenant is presented from a Christian perspective. Secondary students also access their Home Class via Canvas. 

If I have to stop my child using technology, will this impact their learning?

No. You have access to Canvas via your child, so please intervene and choose what is suitable for your child at that time.  

How much time should my child be in front of the screen?

In general terms, 2-3 hours per day is a guide. It would not be recommended for a child or young person to spend more than half their day in front of a screen, keeping in mind all forms of screen-time, such as television and games. In many cases, students will use their device for stimulus, while completing work on paper rather than on the device. 

The eSafety Commissioner provides detailed resources and information to parents to assist them in deciding the appropriate amount of screen time for their children, as well as other information about avoiding online dangers and cyber bullying. 

We aren’t able to login to Canvas? Who can assist us?

Parents do not have a Canvas login. We suggest you sit with your child as they access Canvas. If they are having difficulty, please contact TechServe.

I am unable to assist my child in an area of their learning - who can I ask for assistance?

Your child’s subject or class teacher would love to help them. A question can be asked as a ‘message’ in Canvas, or via ‘discussion’. For younger students, your teacher will have provided guidance about getting help. 

I am struggling to understand the instructions my child's class teacher has set for my child. Can I contact them?

Your child’s subject or class teacher would love to help explain the work. A question can be asked as a ‘message’ in Canvas, or via ‘discussion’. 

My child completes his/her work in a couple of hours. Is that okay?

It is likely that some students will be able to complete their work at home quickly. Talk to your child and have a look at what they have completed. If you have any concerns, contact their class teacher, or year coordinator for additional guidance. You may also like to investigate the Extension and Enrichment page for additional opportunities. 

My child receives Education Support during school time, how is this being managed?

Individual assistance will be provided to students with special needs. You can find out more details by watching these videos. If you have any concerns, or would like further information, please contact the relevant staff member via the Office:

My child is sick, should I tell the school?

Yes, please contact the Office. Unfortunately the Edumate Parent Portal is not currently in use for explaining absences.

Students FAQ

I am at home. Can I continue to learn if I am not at school?

Absolutely. The teachers are uploading lessons to Canvas. 

How long do I have to do the assigned work?

It is anticipated that you will do the work by the end of the week which it is assigned. In Junior School, teachers will let you or your parents know what the expectations are. 

Can I follow my regular timetable if I choose?

There is no expectation that you will follow your regular timetable. You may find that you are able to complete work quickly when you are on your own. However, if you want to go through your subjects in timetabled order, by all means, feel free to do so.  

What should I do if I have a question about work on Canvas?

Send a message to your teacher via Canvas. It is easy to respond to your teacher in Announcements. As a guide, if you want to clarify the task, reply to your teacher’s announcement. If you want to ask a question about the topic or content being taught, you might message your teacher, or post a question for discussion.  

I am in Year 7-10. When will my teacher respond to me in Canvas?

Your teacher will respond to you by the end of the day (4.30pm). 

I am in Year 11-12. When will my teacher respond to me in Canvas?

Your teacher will be online during your timetabled lesson time. Feel free to ask your questions at that point in time. If you ask questions later, your teacher will respond by the end of the day. 

What should I do if I have tech issues?

Start by seeing if you can sort it out at home (turning your device off and on is often very effective!). If you have a Canvas or any other issue which you can’t resolve, please contact TechServe.

What will happen if I don’t do the work?

Your teacher will contact your parents via email. 

What happens if I have a poor internet connection?

If you have a poor connection and you are finding it hard to access materials, please contact your teacher. If this is a continuing issue, we may be able to email your files until your connection improves. 

What if I am sick and I am unable to do an assessment task?

Please follow the usual procedures. If you are in Year 11 or 12, please ask for an illness and misadventure form and if you are in Years 7 to 10, please ask your parent to write a note and send it to your teacher. During the COVID-19 period, we are not requiring medical certificates.  

What if I submit my assessment but it’s a poor standard because I could not access resources?

If you cannot access resources, please email your teacher ahead of time to outline what you think you need. They will do their best to help.  

If you are in Year 11 or 12, and after emailing your teacher, appropriate resources cannot be provided, you may submit your assessment but also ask for an illness and misadventure form.
