Melissa Brown reflects on the Association dinner and AGM that took place earlier this week.
It is a blessing to pray together as a school community! Our Prayer Group warmly invites you to join them in prayer every Thursday during term time, from 9.00-9.30am in Cafe Covie.
Each week in the newsletter, our Prayer Group provides a passage of Scripture for us to meditate on and some prayer suggestions for the week ahead. These can all be found here.
This week we have the pleasure of getting to know Mrs Debbie Helvadjian just a little bit better.
Mrs Helvadjian, what is your role at Covie?
My role at Covie is working in the Sick Bay on Thursdays as the First Aid Officer. I attend to the physical (and sometimes emotional!) needs of whoever walks through the door.
What’s your favorite thing to do with your friends?
I love going out for dinner with my friends, or even better... going on a girl's weekend away!
What have you been reading lately in the Bible? Encouragement/challenges from that?
1 Peter 4:10-11. I have sought out Scriptures that encourage and remind me to use my God-given gifts to serve others - which leads to greater contentment, and not to compare myself with others, as that leads to a sense of inadequacy and feeling frustrated. I'm a work in progress...but getting there :)
Best piece of 'nursing advice'?
Treat everyone equally without judgement and never assume!
What was your very first job?
My first job was in a bakery on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. It was lots of fun and getting leftovers to take home was a bonus! (but not to my waistline!! lol)
Did you become a Christian as a child/teen/adult? Tell us about that journey.
I grew up in the Catholic Church but from an early age I had a feeling that there was more to God than what I knew about him. We had family friends that were Christians, and their inspiring faith led me to make a personal decision to follow Jesus at the age of 11. I attended TABS (Tuesday Afternoon Bible Study) where I was discipled and given my own Bible; that's where I fell in love with Jesus. At 18 I joined a church that loved God and was passionate about his word and serving Jesus, and I have ever since.
What have you done that others would find surprising?
I love to travel and have visited 25 different countries so far!!
So much happens every week at Covenant. Below are some things that have happened lately:
This week the Boys volleyball team travelled to Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium to play in the State CSSA Open Boys Volleyball Gala Day. After months of training, including during the holidays, it was finally time. We started the day by winning all four of our pool games and surviving some tough opponents along the way. The team showed great resilience and teamwork to come back from losing the first set in two of our pool games, to win those games in three sets. We then played Nowra Christian School in the semifinal and in a game that went down to the wire, managed to scrape by and win by the tightest of margins. Inspired by this victory the team rallied together for the final against Pacific Hills, which we managed to win in straight sets! We thank God for the gifts he has given us and the opportunity to play the game, and we had a great time doing so.
- Jannik M, team captain
Our Volleyball team claimed a historic victory at the CSSA Secondary State Volleyball Gala day on Thursday! This team have been training together since Term 1, even fitting in sessions during their Year 12 exam block and the school holidays. The team even ran their own training sessions, videoing and critiquing their technique. We are #covieproud of the efforts of this team, and thankful for their amazing coaches, Mrs Cossart, Mr Newman and Mr Millar.
The Covenant Christian School Association gathered on Wednesday evening for dinner and the Annual General Meeting. It was a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and a chance to reflect on the school’s progress during 2024. We were especially pleased to welcome some of the school’s founders, alongside current parents, staff, and other members of our community.
We welcomed back four Alumni - Matthew Rockwell (Class of 2024), Madeline Smithies (Class of 2022), Daniel Leach (Class of 2008) and Dan Apin (former student and current Director of Student Wellbeing and Service Learning) - who shared the positive impact Covenant has had on their faith. This was such an encouragement, and we thank God for his continued work in their lives.
The Association thanked outgoing Board Director, Simon Higgins, for his faithful service over many years, and then elected new Board Director, Steph Kyme, who brings a background in education and theology to the Board. Steph joins existing directors, Karen Andersen, Stanley Leong and John Woldhuis, and reelected directors, Anne Baker and Bel Ritchie. We thank God for these faithful servants of our school.
The Board places great importance on the views of both the Association and the wider parent community. The AGM included time for discussion and feedback, which we greatly valued. As we begin our strategic planning process, parents will be invited to share their thoughts about the future direction of the school. You are also welcome to contact the Board directly at boardchair@covenant.nsw.edu.au.
The Board are pleased to host an evening for you to find out more about the Association and to consider Association membership. It will be held on Wednesday 18 June, 6.30pm in the Junior School Library. Please RSVP by the 11 June here.

On Monday, Mr Au-Yeung, Mr Cho, Mr Moody and Miss Dale had the pleasure of taking four competitive football teams to the North Met Gala Day. Our Senior Teams fought spiritedly with the boys picking up early wins against Wahroonga and Pacific Hills, before having tough loses against Oxford Falls and Northern Beaches. The senior girls drew early games against both Pacific Hills and Northern Beaches before a close loss to Oxford Falls. They then faced Pacific Hills in the playoff for third and were narrowly defeated 1-0.
Our Junior teams saw great success throughout the day with both teams progressing to the final. The boys with wins against Wahroonga Adventist and Northern Beaches and draws against Pacific Hills and Oxford Falls. We then versed Pacific Hills in the final and despite a strong performance were unfortunately defeated 2-1. The girls had three strong wins against Wahroonga Adventist, Pacific Hills and Oxford Falls before playing Northern Beaches in the grand final. After a gripping and tight contest, not even golden goal could split the two teams resulting in a penalty shootout. With some accurate shooting and some strong goalkeeping our girls emerged victorious!! They will now represent the zone later this term at the CSSA Championships.
It was fantastic to see the students demonstrate a spirit of perseverance and passion for the beautiful game right throughout the day, and we’d like to thank the many parents, carers and friends, who were a fabulous support group right throughout the day.
- Mr Moody, Coach
