This week we took a fabulous group of Secondary students on a tour of the Learning Hub construction site. It was so wonderful to see how excited they were about this building project and the opportunities our students will have.

This week we have the pleasure of getting to know Mrs Summer Furner just a little bit better.
Mrs Furner, what is your role here at Covie?
I'm the Marketing Officer (Digital).
Who is someone who had a big impact on your life and what impact did they have?
My Nana Olga, the way she loved Jesus was inspiring, even in her later years as she battled with dementia. She would sing hymns from the past and find joy in the little things. My hope and prayer is that I continue to keep Jesus at the centre of my life and also enjoy the smalls things too. I’m grateful to have spent so many years with her!
Name two things on your bucket list?
I would love to do a hot air balloon experience (but I don’t like heights, so that probably wouldn’t go down well). I would also love to swim with whales!
What has encouraged you recently from God's Word?
I’ve been encouraged and challenged by Psalm 77:11-13 that says, “I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?"
In the busyness of our day, it can be so easy to forget to think about God or even talk to him. One of the best things we can do is remember him. He created us, pursued us, and gave his own life for us. Remembering God takes intentionality, to commit to reflecting on him each day. I read a commentary about this verse and it said, “Purposefully remembering God’s bigness helps us recognise our smallness. Recalling his goodness helps us understand our deep need for him.”
When we remember what God has done, we will want to celebrate who he is as well.
Some questions I like to ponder – How have I seen God at work in my day? or even in the past? In what ways have I experienced his goodness? And when have I heard him speak to me?
I hope this encourages you to also take time to think about God in your day.
What fictional place would be most exciting to live in?
Genovia from the movie Princess Diaries – It looks like such a fun place to live in and then I can be friends with Princess Mia and sing their national anthem (if you know, you know).
Do you have any irrational fears? What are they?
I have a fear of heights! So my answer to question 2 would definitely not go down well.
What do you love about your church?
The community! Everyone is always so warm and friendly, and I enjoy having a meal with them after church. It feels like home!
Best thing about working at the same place as your sisters?
Shoutout to Mrs Carnell and Miss Willmot! I love that I just get to see them most days! Whether it’s passing them in the playground, seeing them at staff devotions or in the line at Café Covie, it’s always a joy!
What flavour/s of ice cream are you getting in a cup or a cone?
Salted caramel with white chocolate (only from Messina).
It was wonderful to see so many of our community this morning as we took the opportunity to celebrate our mums at our annual Mother's Day Morning! Following a delicious breakfast, we had the privilege of hearing Alison Vander Straaten share her Jesus story with us and were reminded to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
Wishing all our mums a very special Mother's Day for Sunday.
We held our annual Cross Country carnival on Thursday, and despite the cooler, wet conditions, there was a wonderful level of participation. We'll have all the results in by next week, but for now enjoy some photos!
So much happens every week at Covenant. Below are some things that have happened lately:
Our school’s debating team recently took part in their second debate of the HICES Debating Competition, and I’m delighted to report that they were awarded the win. The team argued against the topic: “That all schools should implement peer-to-peer tutoring programs.”
Our students formulated a thoughtful critique of a mandatory peer-to-peer tutoring model and expressed their arguments and rebuttals clearly and confidently. They articulated their concerns about student tutor 'Oscar' being expected to balance his existing workload with challenging tutoring responsibilities ranging from training for the position, adapting work for high needs students and ensuring the safety of the learner student.
In addition, the team provided convincing arguments about why the financial costs required to implement such a tutoring program could be better spent in other ways. The team’s improvement reflections were to be careful to clearly communicate their counter-model in a debate like this one and to look up from their notes more frequently to make connections with the audience.
We can’t wait for the final competition round in Week 5. Congratulations to the entire team on a fantastic effort!
- Debating Coach, Mrs Newcombe
Some of our Secondary students took part in the annual Star Wars Day LEGO challenge earlier this week. Come and see their creations on display until the end of Week 3.
Prep invited their mums to a special celebration for Mother's Day this week. Students made beautiful artwork for the mums, including their own very special bunch of flowers. So sweet!
It is a blessing to pray together as a school community! Our Prayer Group warmly invites you to join them in prayer every Thursday during term time, from 9.00-9.30am in Cafe Covie.
Each week in the newsletter, our Prayer Group provides a passage of Scripture for us to meditate on and some prayer suggestions for the week ahead. These can all be found here.
