The Learning Hub: Book Lovers' Month

Love is in the air at the Learning Hub this month with the Book Lover’s Month. Last week, Secondary Students enjoyed a speed dating/reading activity, challenging them to select books outside their regular genre. The aim was to expose students to stories and styles they would not naturally choose to read, including autobiographies and historical fiction.

Books were scattered on tables around the Learning Hub room where each student was tasked to select one that jumped out to them and spent five minutes silently reading. Once the buzzer went off, in typical speed dating-style, it was time to rate the book and move onto the next one. At the end of the session, students were given the opportunity to reread their reviews and borrow their favourite. The results were encouraging with books flying out the Learning Hub doors with enthusiastic borrowers clutching their book of choice, feeling inspired to read something new and different.

This activity aims to encourage students to read a wider range of books and reignite their passion for the written word. Throughout Secondary School, encouraging students to reading widely (or at all) becomes harder for parents and teachers alike. Activities like speed dating/reading are designed to make reading fun again. And it works! Instead of students viewing it as a duty, their perspective changes and it becomes an enjoyable pastime, something the students will drive themselves.

One of the purposes of the Learning Hub is to be a place of engagement for students, inspiring them to develop and maintain a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
