Spotlight on Visual Arts

What a joy it is to have our students back at school and in our Art Rooms. It only takes a quick look on social media to recognise just what an important role creativity and particularly Visual Arts, has played during isolation. For many, it has been the salve for a very stressful time. The end of Term 1 saw a sudden change of teaching programs and a race to pull together work that could be completed offsite; clay was wrapped up and put into hibernation, Art packs were sent home and major works were collected. During their isolation, the Secondary Visual Arts students have devised, designed and developed some amazing artworks at home, some even using packs hand delivered by their teachers. Artmaking was an activity away from screen time, allowing the students to explore abstraction, create colleges and painting - so much creativity in the ‘everyday’. Art became immersive for many students in dealing the new COVID-19 world.

With the restrictions being eased the classroom once again resonates with imagination, innovation and inspiration as the clay is unpacked, the lino press put to use and the major works make their slow way back to school.

Nothing quite beats that moment when you are able to interact face to face with a student during the creative process. What a joy and a privilege!
