2019 Robocup

Day 1

Covenant entered two teams (the Cool-Ohms and the Green Team) into the NSW RoboCup soccer competition. Joshua Baikie, Joshua Stanwell, Matthew Hodgson and Michael Chapman made up the Cool-Ohms team, whilst Joel Gelding, Zachary Dean, Will Hewitt and Brenton Albances made up the Green team.

Team Cool-Ohm started the competition strongly with a win in their first match. They continued to win all four their round matches, placing them first on the table before the quarter finals. The Green Team started with a loss, but were able to turn things around to come in at fourth on the table before the quarter finals.

Tensions were running high during the quarter finals. Sadly due to a code malfunction, the Cool-Ohm team lost 1 - 0 and ended their campaign there. The Green Team entered their quarter final with a revitalised attacker (with a reinforced arm that would hopefully not fall off after each contact). They were triumphant 3 -0 and were through to the semi finals.

The score was 0-0 at half time during the semi final. Covenant scored early in the second half followed by two disallowed goals. The match went to extra time when the opposition scored a goal in the last second. A well-executed golden goal saw the Green team through to the final.

As the final kicked off with a crowd looking on, Covenant was 1-0 up at the end of the second half. The opposition came back with a great goal, but Covenant managed the winning goal in the death throes of the second half, becoming state champions!

Congratulations and well done to both teams who have worked hard over the year.

Day 2

Day 2 of RoboCup involved the Year 9 Information Software Technology class. The students spent Semester 1 building their skills with the LEGO Mindstorms in preparation for this competition. Team CheckMate entered the Onstage competition with their robot 'Billie' dancing to 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams. They participated in a team interview and demonstration of their robot. ‘Billie’ performed beautifully by remaining within the guidelines on both occasions. A fantastic effort by the team - well done.

Team JJNM entered the Secondary Line Rescue. This team had worked extremely hard over the semester and really challenged their coding skills to enter this competition. They arrived to discover issues that the lighting in different areas of the hall severely impacted the effectiveness of their colour sensors. The team worked tirelessly, making changes to their code, updating firmware and changing the brick. Teachers and mentors were unable to give help, but despite this the team persevered and should be commended for not giving up. They learnt a great deal about how to tackle the competition in 2020.
