Covenant is more than a place for your children to be taught to read and write and learn a few Bible lessons. We are an Association of people who quite consciously see ourselves as not just providers of educational services, but as engaged in the work of the Kingdom of God. Teaching from a Christian perspective — what does this mean in the classroom?

All subjects where required, are taught using Board of Studies syllabuses, ensuring we cover all the mandatory outcomes and learning statements.

Our students are taught their place is to “CURE” the world as their rightful place in God’s world. They are to:

  • “Create” because this is part of their image bearing.
  • “Use” rather than abuse all things in God’s created order. This reflects a biblical understanding of our special relationship with our Creator God.
  • “Rule” in a stewardly way that reflects our status of being co-heirs with Christ, and our special calling to have dominion over the earth in a loving, careful manner.
  • “Enjoy” all of the wonderful parts of Creation despite the impact of sin in the world.

In addition, teachers prepare units of work based on the syllabus to challenge students to think Christianly about what they are learning. In early years, lessons on “The Sea”, for example, will teach about the sea and its wonderful inhabitants in a way which will instill in children wonder and awe not just in the creatures themselves, but in the God who created them. They will also be shown that the sea, as is the rest of Creation, impacted by man’s rebellion against God and is a state of “groaning” (Romans 8) waiting for final redemption when Jesus returns.

Later, in primary years when  children learn about other countries, children will be asked to ponder and reflect how God wants us to treat our fellow human beings, even our enemies, reflecting and responding to our call to be radical disciples

In learning a language that others speak in these countries we respond to the call to show “hospitality to the alien” to see how the gift of language allows us to communicate. It also helps us see God’s love and that He, too, communicates to us by His Word. Maths helps children see the consistency and order in the universe that is only possible because God is a God of order and complexity, and that Maths is dependent upon this part of God’s character.

The Secondary section offers challenging opportunities as novels may deal with divorce, suicide, racial hatred or contain swearing. Students are not overly sheltered from such texts but deal with them in a supportive environment. Evidence of the imperfect nature of the world is seen and we can ponder the deep questions of life such as “Why does God allow suffering?”, “How can we help people who are suicidal, or drug dependent?”

Business, Technology and Economic courses provide wonderful opportunities to discuss Christian ethics and how, following Jesus’ example, we should act. It also allows the students to explore how these good parts of the proper order can usurp their proper place and importance and take on “godlike” status if they are not subjected to an understanding based on a good and proper reading of Scripture.

The Creative Arts allow us to reflect our gifts from the Creator God. Because we are all individuals with differing gifts Covenant offers a wide range of other opportunities: learning support, gifted and extension classes, extra curricular music, dance, public speaking, Duke of Edinburgh, inter school sport and prayer groups.

Finally, we try to model patience and love and to deal with students with understanding by developing a respectful classroom in which all students can learn.

Basis and Aims

The basis of our education is the Bible, God’s Word, which teaches that: All things have been created by God so that He might be glorified in and through them;

  • God is to be honoured and served in all areas of life;
  • God has appointed parents to be responsible for the education of their children and to bring them up in the nurture and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

Our aims can be summarised as follows:

  • To provide a Christ centred education;
  • To teach children to think Christianly;
  • To assist children to make faithful use of their God-given talents;
  • To involve parents actively in the education of their children by participation in day to day activities and in the running of the school;
  • To maintain a commonality of training and teaching at home and at school, while preparing the children to be Christ’s disciples in the world.

Pastoral Care

Covenant is committed to making the school environment a safe place to work and play and witnessing the Christian qualities of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control (Galatians 5:22 -23). Programs developing resilience and self esteem are integrated into the Pastoral Care curriculum.

To put it in the words of the Apostle Paul, our goal for students is they become "children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which they shine like stars in the universe as they hold out the word of life" (Philippians 2:15-16)
