Flexible Learning Guide

A wealth of information for parents and students as we recommence home-based flexible learning.

Course - Dance

At Covenant Christian School, Dance is offered in a manner that supports our Christian world view, with a biblical perspective underpinning all lessons. Students are encouraged to use their skills to serve their school and church communities, and also be equipped to continue on to Stage 6 Dance studies in Year 11 and 12.

Students electing Dance at Covenant Christian School in Year 9 and 10 will engage in an integrated study of:

  • the practices of performance, composition and appreciation
  • the elements of dance (space, time and dynamics)
  • the context of dance as an art form.

Year 9 focus areas

Dance in Year 9 includes the essential content and then progresses sequentially through the sections of additional content based on 100 hours of study.

Year 10 focus areas

In Year 10, the Dance course includes the essential content (100 hours) and additional content (100 hours) with students having the opportunity to apply dance technique to a variety of dance styles.

Students who have studied Dance in Year 9 and 10 (Stage 5) have a developing understanding of dance as an art form demonstrated in the making and performing of dances and the appreciation of their meaning. They have developed the appropriate dance technique (strength, flexibility, coordination, endurance and skill) required to perform choreographed combinations, sequences and dances of increasing complexity based on the elements of dance, with a basic understanding of safe dance practice. In their performance, they exhibit a developing projection, focus and confidence.

What styles of dance do we do?

We cover a range of styles in this course including Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Musical Theatre, some world and folk dance…and also do a unit on Dance Film.

Do I have to be taking regular dance classes to join this course?

No, you can do this course with minimum dance training and yet the course will also be interesting and stimulating for dancers with more experience.

What do I have to wear?

A black leotard or dance top, black dance pants or leggings, ballet or jazz shoes (depending on what style we are studying).

Do I need to be in the Dance Eisteddfod or Musical Dance Team?

Yes you do, as we want you to have the opportunity to share your God-given talents and abilities with our school community. More performance opportunities also refine and improve your dance abilities.
