'mainly music' is a fun music group for parents and primary care-givers to enjoy with their young children. Aimed at kids from ages 0 to 5 years old, the
90 minute program is designed to develop and extend gross and fine motor skills, language, imagination, mathematical, pre-reading skills as well as
share the gospel with families. It also provides a valuable opportunity for parents (and kids!) to socialise and build relationships with each
'mainly music' is now in its second year of running at Covenant Christian School. It is held every Friday morning in the Junior library. We decided to
catch up with Michelle Mucci, organiser of 'mainly music', to hear what has been happening!
Q. Where did the idea of 'mainly music' come from?
'mainly music' was started over 25 years ago in a number of New Zealand churches as a way to support parents and primary care-givers who have young children
in the local community. We understand that this can often be a time which can be stressful and tiring, so 'mainly music' aims to provide a comfortable
environment where encouraging friendships are built and families can explore the ‘God part’ of their lives.
Q. What have been some of the highlights of running 'mainly music' at Covenant?
We have been blessed with so many different parents and carers who have been interested in 'mainly music' since our start last year. The majority of these
parents actually come from outside the Covenant community so it’s wonderful that, as a school community, we have an opportunity to engage and
bless so many different families.
Many carers have expressed to me that 'mainly music' is the highlight of their week. They have said that it’s just so nice to leave the house on a Friday
morning and know that their child’s food and entertainment needs will be taken care of without the need for them to prepare anything. They also appreciate
the special treatment they are shown by the 'mainly music' team who serve them coffee and morning tea while taking the time to connect with them individually.
The 'mainly music' team enjoy opportunities to pray for these families and share life’s ups and downs.
Parents also appreciate the special time that they get to spend with their little one while enjoying the music activities together. We have lots of fun
with the parachute and the children love making lots of noise on the drums, but the bubbles are always the favourite!
Q. How can people be involved?
There are a number of ways to be involved:
On a Friday morning, we love having volunteers who might want to help with setting up, packing up, or helping mothers who are trying to juggle more than
one child. This can be on a roster, rather than a weekly commitment. Anyone who is interested can email email@example.com
Secondly, we would love some help with the making of props - sewing finger puppets, creating craft etc. This is a wonderful way to bless the Covenant
community from the comfort of your own home.
Families with 0 to 5 year olds are always welcome to come along for a free trial session.
If your church has events coming up that you feel would be of interest or benefit to these families, please notify Michelle on firstname.lastname@example.org.
