Why a Transition?
Covenant Christian School Sydney seeks to assist parents in the nurture of their children and equip them to live for God’s glory.
Transition is a Christian preschool on our Belrose school site. The class of only 20 students helps us better prepare children for kindergarten, and their formal education. Having a Christian preschool enables us to better cater for the whole family on one location. The preschool class allows a smooth progression into formal schooling as the children are familiar with the environment, routines and other staff at Covenant.
Transition at Covenant Christian School provides your child with a Christian preschool which is a nurturing and caring introduction to kindergarten and formal school years.
Who – Children’s ages
Transition caters for children who have turned four years of age by 31 May of the year they commence (eg 2010). Limited places are available in the 2-day program for three year olds who are fully toilet trained.
Who - Staffing
All staff at Covenant are committed Christians. Children in Transition are taught and supervised by a qualified and experienced early childhood teacher with the assistance of a fulltime teacher’s aide.
How - Curriculum
The Vision and Mission of Covenant Christian School Belrose underpins all areas of our curriculum. Our desire to provide a Christ-centred education is reflected throughout all Transition class activities. Play is an essential part of early childhood learning, therefore it forms the largest part of the daily routine of Transition. This includes outdoor play, fine motor development, music, stories and games. Children who are ready join in pre-reading and reading activities. Transition strives to identify the strengths and needs of the individual child, supporting and nurturing them to enable them to develop to their full potential.
Transition children have opportunities to visit the Library, Kindergarten classes and Infants Playground, particularly during Term 4. They also join in school experiences such as Infants Assemblies, visiting performers and groups, eg Musica Viva, wildlife displays, book week parade, etc.
It is not our intention to teach the children in Transition to read and write however we will provide an opportunity for the children to further any strengths they may have already displayed outside of school.
The following skills will be developed throughout the year in Transition:
- Writing their name
- Holding a pencil correctly
- Pre-reading and pre–writing skills
- Encouraging listening and talking skills
- Developing a sense of routine
- Enhancing social skills including taking turns, sharing and looking others in the eye
- Developing book awareness skills
- Promoting a sense of awareness of letters and numbers
- Developing a love of God and the world He created
What - Facilities
Transition class is located in a separate fully fenced building and play area in the grounds of Junior School. The play area is shaded and equipped with appropriate play equipment. Transition children have their own toilet facilities accessed from within the classroom. Transition children also enjoy a variety of play and educational equipment, suitable for their age, within the classroom.
