Scott Flansburg the Human Calculator

Date Posted: 21-Aug-2009

On Thursday August 27, the students of Year 7 and some senior students enjoyed a presentation from Scott Flansburg, the Human Calculator, who holds a Guinness World record for his feats in Maths! Scott earned this nickname because of his remarkable math skills that allow him to add, subtract, multiply, and divide (even do square and cube roots) all in his head with amazing speed and calculator accuracy.

Scott added the same number to itself more times in 15 seconds than a person could do with a calculator, which is why he is the Guinness World Record holder for "Fastest Human Calculator". According to Scott, he would be even faster, but he can't speak the answers as fast as he can calculate them in his head!

In his 20-plus years of teaching math, Scott has appeared on several talk shows including Oprah, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dateline NBC, ABC's Good Morning America, and has spoken at conferences run by NASA, and now most impressively, Covenant Christian School Sydney.

Scott Flansburg believes everyone has the ability to be good at math and enjoy it, but that most people have not learned to do math in a way that works for them. The Human Calculator is dedicated to helping students and adults to overcome their math-related fears. He displayed some of his amazing talents in arithmetic, but also shared some of the history of number and helped students understand the patterns that allow him to add and multiply quickly. At the end of his presentation, he asked students for their date of birth, and he was able to tell them what day of the week they were born on! Some students (and teachers) are still scratching their heads trying to work out how he did it.

We look forward to hearing from Scott some time again in the future.

After seeing Scott in action and his teaching methods we have decided to post the entire 35 minute session on our School's YouTube channel.  We had to break it up into four sections for YouTube.

Just viewing you on youtube today. Have you made up any math games for parents to start teaching their children at a very early age?
