Over 80 members of the school association enjoyed a dinner and update as part of the Annual General Meeting. The Association membership has grown by over 20% since the last AGM. The guest speaker for the dinner was former student Rachel Bennett (Class of 2009), who spoke of her journey since school.
Rachel has studied law and spent time serving and working with the ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia) based in the Hague, Netherlands. The court is investigating and prosecuting war criminals from the former Yugoslav republics. Rachel spoke of the impact on her of some teachers at Covenant and the desire for social justice that has impacted many students in her year group. Rachel was admitted to practice as a lawyer last month. A video of her speech is below and is well worth the time to listen to.
In her report, Chairperson Helen Bilton spoke of the broader vision of the Association including "To establish and maintain Covenant Christian School, and such other educational institutions as the Association may determine." Helen asked for prayer as the Board considers the possibilities and implications of the Association creating other educational institutions.
We said farewell and thanked Board members Julie Mathews and Rod Post who have served for many years. Dean Stewart was re-elected to the Board. The AGM naturally included the formal proceedings of presenting and accepting various reports and appointing of auditors. Several members took the opportunity to tour the new E and F Block classrooms.
The Association also watched a recently created video which helps explain the origin and importance of their role. (Below)
