Bald Covie People’s Choice 2011

The Bald Covie is Covenant Christian School’s own “mini Archibald”. The artwork is by Year 10 students and each is a self portrait, yet often not in the traditional sense. In creating the Body of Work for the Bald Covie students have been involved in the study, analysis and construction of artworks around the theme of self-portraits.

In response to the artworks of others, students are encouraged to gain further insight into the nature of people, made in God’s image, sinful, in need of God’s redemption and love. They will explore the way others have responded visually to the nature, lives, practices and physical form of people. Through the subject matter in this unit students are involved in responding to their environment and to the culture of others, as well as our contemporary culture. Issues such as cultural diversity, religious choices, different lifestyles and priorities, differences in the way people look and a variety of emotions, will all be looked at, and responded to, through the study of a wide variety of portraits. In the light of scripture and using Jesus’ example of unconditional love students will further develop an appreciation and understanding of the diverse nature of human kind. We will rejoice in our differences and respond sensitively to others.

Throughout Term 2 the students’ art making has explored the concept of being made in God’s likeness and as such displays a reflection of His creativity and character. Students have explored a variety of media, art making methods and ranges of presentation, which portray the physical appearance of the face, emotional qualities and expressions, mood and meaning in their work.

This is the fifth year of the Bald Covie and the fourth where voting for the People's Choice Award has been open to the general public.
