Have you seen ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’? Did you notice the beautiful accompanying music? Last week, the flautist, an expert in Asian flutes who played on the soundtrack for ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’, performed at our school as a member of the visiting musical group, ‘Sirocco’. Children in Years 3 to 6 had been studying Sirocco’s music for the past term as part of the Musica Viva in Schools program. Sirocco’s Music is a blend of Australian, Pacific and Asian styles. This performance was a culmination of the learning program. The children were excited to see and hear the large range of instruments the group bought with them, everything from a classic Fender Stratocaster (the electric guitar favoured by Buddy Holly) and a synthesizer / recorder to ouds, ch’ins, shengs, gungaroos and dizzis. It was a dazzling performance of musical skill and the children were mesmerized. Music from other countries can, upon early acquaintance, be a challenge to appreciate. Detailed study can open up a wealth of understandings into other cultures and their rich diversity of musical expression.
