Year 6 Canberra Trip 2009

Date Posted: 03-Nov-2009

Everyone was probably so excited to go to Canberra! On the 21st of October, Year 6 packed their bags and woke up early, to get to school at 5:45 am!  Our first destination was Questacon.  Everyone enjoyed going on the Free Fall or the Trak Attack.

Our next destination was the War Memorial which is a fascinating and interesting place. There were many sculptures and some looked quite real.  The National Capital Exhibition was next with its’ beautiful fountain and history of how Canberra was chosen as our nation’s capital.

We finished off the day with the Australian Institution of Sport.  It was really, really interesting to hear all the amazing things that all the athletes do and how long they practice. Many swimmers tie a milk carton to their feet, so that they can increase their strength. It’s incredible!

Next

We woke up early and headed off to the National Museum.  Many people enjoyed K-space, as we got to invent our own little spaceships and see them move around in a 3-D movie.  Our next destination was the National Film and Sound Archive.  We learnt about how they collect the olden day films and many various sounds from movies, shows etc. In the olden days, when they were performing shows, they didn’t have the sound effects at once, so they had to have a person doing ALL the sound effects!

We had our lunch and our next destination was the National Gallery, full of great sculptures and paintings. It was really hard to believe that one painting could cost thousands of dollars!  We had a tour of the embassies of many countries - America’s was obviously very, very big.   Afternoon tea was then up Mt Ainslie with its spectacular views of Canberra.

We finished off the day with bowling and campfire songs.  Many people enjoyed the song, “Funky Chicken!” and roasting yummy marshmallows.

The last day we packed our bags and visited Old and New Parliament Houses before returning home to Sydney.  Our Canberra trip was a wonderful time that we will never forget.
