Two weeks in Germany for language studentsDate Posted: 28-Oct-2009 |

On Sunday 27th September, 2 teachers, Mrs Downing and Mrs Conway set off to Germany with 5 students from year 10 and year 11. They were to spend over 2 and a half weeks in Bremen with buddies from their host school. The final 2 days of their stay were spent in Berlin before returning to Sydney ready to start term 4. Natasha Worton and Matt Killen had the following to say about their experiences… Three weeks in a new country where they speak another language, with the same four other students and two teachers, it’s possibly enough to turn you crazy. Fortunately, however I’m as sane as I was prior to leaving… It was an amazing trip. Germany is a beautiful country and everyone was so friendly and helpful. I learnt things, and experienced things that you can’t when sitting in a class room reading a text book and half-listening to someone talk about a place on the other side of the world. And it was ridiculously fun. We did something new and interesting every day. It ranged from school to shopping, to museums and the zoo, to theme parks and sunset at famous monuments. You can study a place for years, but you don’t know what it's like until you wake up and smile at the sun from there… …I’ve smiled at the sun from Germany and it is fantastisch. Natasha Worton Year 10 Stage fright was a problem when I first arrived. Like music, I was immersed in another culture where phrases, new ways of speaking were placed in your throat and changed the way you spoke. You have a lot of people you can speak to and all of Germany is your stage. The best thing is, there is no pressure. You’re just there enjoying speaking to people and experiencing a new way of life. Stage fright goes away when the stage becomes more familiar. The twists and turns of the sweet, soft-coloured alley ways blessed by Autumn leaves will remain in my mind long after I have left. (Translation: It’s great that you went to Germany. I started learning German at CCS and now I live in Heidelberg. Have fun learning German. It’s worth it!.)
