Writers Camp 2009 at Camp Kedron

Date Posted: 28-Sep-2009

On the 22nd and 23rd September various students went to a writers workshop. On the first day at Camp Kedron we were introduce to Mrs Bachelor. She split us into three groups. We all sat in a circle and the teacher for each group went around asking us:  What is our name? What our favourite book and/or series is and why did we come to writer’s workshop?

After this we went to our tables and Mrs Bachelor told us to leave the first page for a title page and make the second page a contents. Our first real page we had was a mind map for our story and 4 branches: who, what, when and where. That was our first step towards writing our story. Next Mrs Bachelor wrote a bunch of genres on the white board and we had to pick a few and write the ones that we may or may not use in our story. Then we had to go to a clean page and write whatever popped into our heads and some people ended up with some pretty funny stuff.

Then Mrs Bachelor showed us her ‘guidelines’ for writing they were:
1. Keep it simple
2. Write what you know
3. Observe
4. Show don’t tell
5. Be brave

Then we listed all our characters we could have in our story like Milo the monkey man or Allan A Allan. Then we had to make a mind map of our characters with these branches: home, physical, secrets, activities and people.

The next day we each made a mind map of our main setting with these branches: senses, location, people and physical. Then we all made the foot hold of our story by making four columns: opening, complication, events and ending. After writing some more guidelines on point of view and dialogue we wrote our story.

All in all we had a really good time and us who went to writers workshop have this to say:
Thankyou Mrs Bachelor
