Disney cartoonist teaches kids at camp

Date Posted: 28-Sep-2009

At Toon Camp 2009, we were fortunate enough to have two highly qualified cartoonists in Lily Dell and Jonathan Downer come to share their expertise with us this year, affording us with the opportunity to break into two separate groups.

Lily lead the Year 5 group who greatly enjoyed the new skills they acquired. She shared with us snippets from a number of the projects that she has been involved with when working as a cartoonist for Disney. The whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and we are very grateful to Lily for her expertise.

Jono lead the Year 6/7 group over the two days. He taught us to first create a line of action, followed by the construction of the character and finally to add the details. It was mesmerizing to see him work, and profitable to have a pattern to follow.  A number of the students in this group backed up from last year, with obvious progress being made. We would love to thank Jono for his great skill and wonderful input.

All cartoonists really appreciated mixing with kids from other schools, whose passion for cartooning we shared. It is great to be able to return home with a portfolio under our arms that contained a record of our improvement over the two days. We hope that the skills gleaned at Cartoon Camp will remain with us and bubble over onto our pages.
