Joseph Chen and Jeremiah Hunter participated in the United Nations Public Speaking competition. They were absolutely brilliant. Each gave a prepared speech plus an impromptu one against numerous elite school (Kings, Sydney Girls, etc). Joseph won this round of the comp (Regional Final) and will now proceed to the Grand Final at NSW Parliament House. The United Nations Youth Association (UNYA) NSW Division Junior Public Speaking Competition provides high school students in years 7 to 9 with an opportunity to engage with issues of international consequence and present their ideas in a public forum. The competition consists of two parts: the prepared speech and the impromptu speech. The prepared speeches are 3-5 minutes, and must be selected from the list of topics below. Students are assessed on their originality, flair and ideas presented. Their capacity to demonstrate analytical skills, empathy and a realistic understanding of their chosen topic will also form part of the judging criteria. The impromptu speeches are 1-2 minutes, and students only receive 5 minutes to prepare. All contestants speak on the same topic. Students need not limit themselves to international issues for this component. The emphasis in this category is on how well students respond to the topic set, whether they demonstrate diversity of material, and whether the impromptu is clearly argued and well presented. The prepared and impromptu speeches are of equal weight. Regional winners are announced on the night, and automatically proceed to the finals held at NSW Parliament House. The next highest ranking speeches overall also proceed to finals, and will be notified at the conclusion of regional rounds. All competitors receive individual feedback sheets on the night of the competition and are free to speak to the adjudicator after the event for more detailed information. The United Nations Youth Association of Australia is a national community-based organisation run for and by young people which have been broadening youth horizons for over fifty years.
