Under 12 Rugby Gala Day 2009

Date Posted: 17-Sep-2009

The Under 12's Rugby Gala Day was a great day of footy with the boys playing awesomely as a team and displayed outstanding sportsmanship.  Will Bainbridge was the man of the gala day with powerful tackling, strong runs and he scored the most tries of the day.

Here is a summary of the games...

Game 1: Emmanuel Christian School
After a long drive out to Bass Hill the boys started slowly but by the end of the first half they were just ahead by 3 tries to 2.  They then stormed home in the second half due to excellent tries to Will, Richard and Hayden followed by a perfect conversion record.

Game 2:  John Wycliffe Christian School

This game was a seesawing affair with both teams having the lead several times throughout the match.  It was characterized by excellent attack but poor defense.  Justin stole the show with a hat trick of tries. In the end we were even on tries but won due to our excellent conversion kicking by Zac, Braden, Will and Tim.  Unfortunately Heinrich tore the ligaments in his finger at the start of this game with some gallant tackling right on our defensive line and was unable to play for the remainder of the day.

Game 3: Pacific Hills Christian School
By now the boys were growing in confidence and their simple but low error play was working extremely well.  They ended up running away with the match 6 tries to 2.  With Jacob, Will, Josh and Hayden all scoring excellent tries.

Game 4: Rouse Hill Anglican College
This was our final and toughest game of the day.  We were both undefeated and keen to win, however, the boys were definitely overwhelmed with the size of the majority of their team.  In this game Rouse Hill were on top early but due to some excellent tackling from Richard and some good tries from Tim and Hayden we started to claw back the difference to be behind by only 1 try.  Despite the boys enthusiasm (Zac scored his first try of the day and gave the fans a great dive finish), hard work and a few awesome one on one steals we ended up losing by 1 converted try.

Final: Rouse Hill Anglican College
After a short break we ended up playing Rouse Hill again but this time the boys knew they were capable of beating them.  After a few practice conversions and passes the team went to a huddle and had two strategies.
1)   Simple dummy half runs with minimal passing
2)   Play fair and don’t argue with the referee

Initially the game was very close with both teams trading tries, however, we were ahead due to our superior drop kicking ability (well done to Will, Tim, Hayden, Braden and Josh who were the best kickers of the gala day).  After a while the game started to get very tense and after a few critical penalties Rouse Hill started to lose their composure and argued with the referee.  The boys to their credit remained calm and played like they did the entire day “hard but fair”!  As a result Rouse Hill lost possession of the ball and we took the chance scoring a great try and getting a 2 goal buffer.  We eventually held out and won the gala day by 1 try and 2 conversions.  Try scorers in the final were Will (2), Hayden (2), Richard (2), Jacob (1) and Tim (1).

Special thanks goes to Nadean Tucker who gave great support from the sideline and helped a forgetful teacher with the scoring!!!
