State Soccer Gala Day 2009

Date Posted: 08-Sep-2009

Despite the early start and a long drive out to Jamieson Park at Penrith the boys were pumped for some tough competition.

Game 1 Dubbo Christian School:
The boys started with all guns blazing totally dominating the first ten minutes of play and creating several near scoring opportunities.  Eventually Jack Gilbert scored with a well timed header which sailed over the keeper.  Apart from a few good attacking runs from Matt Phillips we were outplayed in the second half and were lucky not to concede a goal.

Final score 1-0

Game 2 Tyndale Christian School:
A much tougher contest and the boys rose to the challenge.  They started to string together some passes and looked good bringing the ball up from the backs to the forwards.  Tyndale were the first to score making use of their 2 extremely quick strikers to pop one in the net from a good through ball.  To the boys credit they kept fighting and with about 5 minutes from the end of the match Michael Cathers slotted one in from an excellent cross.

Final score 1-1

Game 3 Cedars Christian School:
Our final game of the pool rounds and we needed to win well in order to qualify first for the semi finals.  The game started in perfect fashion when Luke Curnow took the ball from the kick off (some would say he hogged it!) and decided to take on the opposition by himself.  After beating 3-4 players he ended up near the corner post and made the most amazing shot most of us had ever seen.  Despite the ridiculously fine angle it managed to lob the keeper and find the top corner of the net.  To cedars credit and our poor discipline they soon replied with a goal which was quickly followed by another Luke Curnow goal.  In the second half Cedars were definitely were on top scoring again and having several chances to go up 3-2.  The boys started  to get a bit frustrated and were rushing their passes but eventually Joshua Hill scored the winning goal from a volley off a well taken corner.

Final score 3-2

We ended up tying with Tyndale on points and goal difference but because we scored more goals than them we ended up winning the pool.  Our next match was against Green Point Christian School who came second in their pool.

Semi Final Green Point Christian School:
A very tight game with solid defence from both teams.  We had 2 good opportunities in the match with 1 shot deflecting off the post while Green Point only had 1 good opportunity.  In the end the sides couldn’t be split and it went to a penalty shot out!  The boys were very keen to win this as last year they lost in the semis to Green Point by a penalty shoot out.  Jacob Iskendarian was the star of the shoot out with an excellent first save to put us in the lead and take some of the pressure off our kickers.  All of our penalties were textbook and we ended up winning 5-3 with Josh Hill, Jack Gilbert, Tom Sheehan, Luke Curnow and Mickey Chung making the shots.

Final Tyndale:
The boys were very sore and tired but keen to win the day!  The first half was very tight and due to good defence no goals were scored but Tyndale definitely looked the better team.  Tyndale scored an early goal in the second half due to some lazy defence and a good cross.  After some positive words from Jack they kept fighting hard but still could get any good opportunities.  Eventually Tyndale scored again in the dying minutes and the game was all over.

Final score 0-2.

A great effort by all the boys who to their credit played hard but in an excellent spirit!  Special thanks to our parent helpers who woke up incredibly early and drove a long way to support the team.  Mrs Tucker, Mr Sheehan, Mr Chung & Mr Curnow thanks a million!
