Focus on the Family seminars for Year 8 and 9

Date Posted: 08-Sep-2009

On Wednesday 2nd September, Marc Erbsleben from Focus on the Family spoke with Years 8 and 9. Year 8 looked at the importance of sexual purity and Year 9 focused on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Year 8 Summary
Marc reminded students that God has a purpose for their lives – that it is His will and purpose for them to be pure!
Marc talked of the emotional and physical pressures that may be experienced during the teenage years and spoke of principles and strategies to combat these pressures.

“For the PURPOSE of God FOR YOU is this: that you may be holy, and may keep yourselves from the desires of the flesh; so that everyone of you may keep his body holy and in honour”  ( 1 Thes 4: 2-3).

This Scripture informs us that it is God’s will and purpose for us to be pure! Marc emphasized the importance of setting short and long term goals for your life that are a result of seeking to grow in God’s love.  Setting goals will also help to establish personal boundaries.

There are influences in our society that challenge our goal to be pure in mind and body. Our culture:
1.    Is sex-saturated
2.    Requires no commitment in relationships
3.    Accepts binge drinking
4.    Accepts pornography

Marc spoke of the addictive nature of binge drinking and pornography. Emphasis was on the destructive nature of pornography and its negative impact on relationships.

In conclusion, Marc outlined some points on how to build great relationships:
1.    Honour God
2.    Start with the end in mind
3.    Set boundaries (establish rules for relationships)
4.    Be honest and transparent
5.    Remember that what you feed your mind on is important – it influences our beliefs and our actions.

Year 9 Summary
Marc reminded us that the choices we make in life don’t just affect us, they will also affect others. The common phrase “It’s my life, I can do what I like with it” is incorrect. Choices affect sisters, brothers, mother, father and friends, church and school (and the circle widens to the community.)

In summary, Marc pointed out that the consequences of taking drugs (hard or soft) can lead to a life of addiction where the quality of life is lost!

Overall, drugs:
•    Harm the body
•    Are addictive
•    Change behavior
•    Kill the innocent
•    Feed the dealer
•    Alienate from others
•    Bring regret
•    Destroy families
•    Are an enemy to the human spirit

Thanks to Focus on the Family’s representative, Marc, for presenting thought-provoking seminars!
