High School Annual Ski Trip 2009

Date Posted: 07-Sep-2009

On Friday 14th August about 41 excited students joined 10 parents and staff members on a bus bound for Jindabyne and the snow on the annual CCS ski trip.  After arriving safely in Jindabyne we got our skis and boards and clothing ready for Saturday, and headed back to the rooms for an early night in bed.

SATURDAY
Saturday commenced 6am in the morning which followed a night of sleeplessness due to a cabin who was enjoying itself too much to rest (maybe due to excitement!). Once we forced ourselves awake we headed to breakfast. Breakfast was rather uneventful but as soon as we were finished we got ready to get back on the bus and head to Thredbo.

After a rather anxious 30 minute bus trip we all arrived. We all managed to get a quick run down Friday Flats before lessons which could’ve ended better for me as it was my first time skiing and I didn’t know how to slow down. The lessons did get better as we started to go down slopes and learning a bit more on how to ski. When the ski lessons ended we all headed down (well actually up) to Meritts where we were to regroup and eat.

The food in Thredbo, apart from costing far beyond what the meal should’ve cost, tasted pretty good and after eating our fill we went our separate ways.

My group of people (Me, Eugene, Murray, Tanya, Hannah and Mikhaila) embarked along the mountain face for quite some time. After losing Eugene and Mikhaila on a T-bar (later to find out they got lost on a black run) and watching Tanya and Hannah get dragged up by their ski’s, we all continued the journey where we then got owned in a snowball fight by another group of people.

After falling down a hill and getting lost from my group I spent a decent part of the next hour wandering finally to find Tanya Mikhaila and Eugene lying a pile of snow. After we finally got back to Friday Flats we headed back to the bus. Once on the bus and driving back we all shared funny stories of the day involving echidnas and other odd things that occurred that day. One back we had a nice dinner and played a lot of pool and ping pong. That night a bunch of us went outside to a beautiful star filled sky where we lay on doonas (and people) and sang songs and swapped stories and saw a shooting star. (Luke Walker)

SUNDAY
Despite it bucketing down on the second day we all skiied and had a blast. The second day me and Brayden joined a public skii lesson because the private ones were not up to our level. The group was me, Brayden , some guy from cambera and the skii instructor so the public group turned out to be much smaller than the private one.

After the lesson we decided to go up a T-Bar to the top of the mountain. As we went up the T-Bar the rain turned to ice and the wind increased massively. The blizzard really bites you in the face, especially when your wearing sunglasses rather than skii goggles. At the top we could hardly stand up and the visability was about 10m. (Matt Betts)

Some of us, after a while, took shelter in an extremely packed cafe where we waited for it to stop raining as well as getting dry. This failed as it wouldn’t stop raining. We decided to go back out anyway, just as it began to stop raining and headed off up to Meritts to meet up with some more people but once we got the chair lift all of our group save me and Eugene decided it looked to dangerous to ski and went back down.

Once we all to Merrits we were told that we were leaving about 2 hours early and we had to be back at the bus in about half an hour. So we departed back into the gale outside, everyone freezing because the rain had soaked through their ski jackets. In the fastest skiing we ever did to get back down the mountain we arrived back at the bus in record time, only to wait for a very very late James O’Malley.

We then brought our rented stuff back to the hiring place and embarked back on our 5 and a bit hour journey home. After hours of sitting down, watching odd old school DVD’s, maccas, and playing rugby at a gas station, we finally got home. (Luke Walker)
