CIS Rugby League 7s Gala Day 2009

Date Posted: 01-Sep-2009

A beautiful morning on the last day of winter greeted players from some 20 CIS schools from across NSW, who gathered together on the lush grass of The Crest Sporting fields at Bass Hill. Covenant Christian School have been playing in this annual carnival since 1990 and it is a highlight of the rugby league calendar at school.

The day began with two pool games for each of the teams, until they were regraded into two different divisions – the trophy and the plate.

The senior boys had two tough games to begin the day. Their first match was against Christian Community High School (Regents Park). The game was fast and exciting. Tries to Toby Tucker, Luke Curnow and Chad Wakeford had us well in the hunt. We just lost that game 18 – 16 as goal kicking was the difference. In their second match, the boys played against Carinya Christian School (Tamworth). Again the Covenant boys dominated, scoring 4 tries to 3 (Rhys Cole 2, Luke Curnow 1 and Blair Mottau 1) and the game ended in a 20 – 20 draw.

In the first game for the junior boys, we played Emmanuel College. The lead changed a couple of times, and tries to Ken Szeremeta and the flying David Kossally had the game finish in an exciting 10 – 10 draw. Daniel Thornton must have made 20 tackles in that match! The boys started their second match against Sutherland Christian School a little slowly, and were down 10 – 0 early in the match. A barge-over try from Josh Ianni kept us in the match, but the boys eventually lost the match 14 – 6.

So the senior boys moved onto the Trophy Division, and the 15's went into the Plate Competition. In the next game for the opens team, they played a very strong side from Riverina Anglican College. Covenant got out to a handy lead through two wonderful tries to Chad Wakeford, but the fast finishing Riverina team beat us on the bell, scoring on the stroke of full time to win the match 18 – 12. In their last game, Covenant came out firing against a strong Bankstown Grammar side. Tries to Chad, Blair and Rhys ensured that Covenant got home 18 – 16.

The Under 15s played against Nowra Anglican College in their next match, a big side with good ball skills. Nowra got out to a big first half lead, and although Covenant fought back through a try to Josh Ianni, Nowra ran out winners 22 – 6. So the boys went into their last match hoping to finish the day on a good note against St Mark’s College. Josh Ianni slipped a great pass to Andrew Chen for the first try, and then Andrew backed that effort up with a wonderful 70m run down the sideline to get us out to an early 12 – 0 lead. St Mark’s came back in the second half of the match, but Covenant sealed the win when Josh Ianni crashed over next to the posts, the final score being Covenant winning 16 – 4.

It was a wonderful day of Rugby League, and from the coaches’ point of view, we were really proud of the effort of the students against tough opposition, and also with the wonderful sportsmanship they displayed on the day. A big thank you to our wonderful drivers on the day, Mrs Gradwell, Mrs Thornton, Mr Curnow and Joel Wakeford, who helped us in many ways, with encouragement and coffee for the busy coaches a highlight!
