Junior Girls Soccer Gala Day 2009Date Posted: 31-Aug-2009 |
After the Junior School girls’ soccer Gala day was rained out in July, the Covenant girls got back to training. Monday 24 August was perfect. By 7:00am we were all in our cars and heading to Penrith. It was great to have the support of Mrs Tucker, Mr Shapiro and Mr Lovcik who all made the trip out for the second time. Our first game was against Greenpoint Christian College. It was a great warm up as they proved tough competitors and gave all the girls a chance to see the ball. We played two 10 minute halves and by the final whistle we had managed to slot away one goal. Throughout the day only one team ever scored on us. A valiant defensive effort from Abi, Hannah, Sarah, Gianna, Sabrina, Faith, Rachel and Ellie, keeping our goal keepers fairly bored through most games. Our pool had five teams in it and our draw allowed us plenty of time to watch the other teams compete. We recognised immediately that our real test would be our final game against Rouse Hill. The next two games gave plenty of opportunity to hone our attack with several girls chipping in for goals. Our forwards, Isabella, Annaliese, Millie, Boyoung, Chelsea, Jess Wye, Alicia, Katarina and Julie, combined well to keep the ball near the opposition goals. The other teams competed well and it was great to see the Covenant girls being generous in victory. As expected, our final game was much more intense. The girls tasted defeat for the first time with a gritty 2 – 1 loss. We then had 20 minutes to gather ourselves for the semis. Sutherland Christian School had finished their pool on top and we had to beat them to proceed. Covenant started the game a little flat after a grueling day. Five minutes into the game we had repelled several attacks and the score was still nil all. Slowly we began to build intensity and gained some field position. Second half was all Covenant but we still could not finish off any of the good attacking runs we had. The game finished scoreless, however the Sutherland team was handed the win on corners. They then went on to win the day against Northern Beaches Christian School in the final.
