PE teacher choses to Break the Cycle

Date Posted: 07-Sep-2009

Mr Trevaskis, one of Covenant's PE staff will be spending his school holidays on a bicycle. Break the Cycle is a 1,500 km bike ride from Brisbane to Canberra. The fundraising ride is for a cause close to the hearts of many in our Covenant Community.

The ride has been organised to raise money for Eagles Wings Africa which is an organisation that runs a number of Christian School Campuses in Zambia for children who because of circumstances are too poor to attend Government schools; and a community foster care program to help integrate children orphaned by HIV/AIDS back into families in the community.

Learn more about the vision behind the ride with this 4 minute YouTube video

The ride has two purposes.
1. Raise funds to help complete building projects for the schools and the day to day running of the school.
2. Raise awareness of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and to call upon the Government to keep to their promises of funding to help decrease world poverty by 50% by the year 2015.

Where: Brisbane to Canberra (That's not all down hill!!)
When: September 27 to October 11 (With approximately 25 other people)
Who: Mr Trevaskis, plus 25 others. (Mr Hill will also be hoping on a bike for the last leg from Goulburn to Canberra)

So why is Mr Trevaskis giving up his holidays for this cause????
"I’ve got involved not just because I enjoy cycling but also because over the last couple of years I’ve been challenged to think carefully about how I can help those in need or who don’t have the same opportunities as we do here in Australia or who are being exploited. I’ve often wondered what impact one person can make but helping to provide an education for young people who otherwise wouldn’t get one is actually a significant impact – and knowing that that is a Christian education that has an eternal impact is even greater!"

Let's get behind Mr Trevaskis and Mr Hill as a school  community. Let's help ensure their ride really does make a difference!!

How can I be involved?

The group will be sleeping in church halls along the way. Mr Trevaskis is hopeful for some thicker mattresses along the way after spending the day on a bike. So let him know if you have friends or family along the route!
