Our beautiful Year 1 teacher Miss Hung became Mrs Sun on Saturday 21st March. St Peter's Presbyterian Church at North Sydney was overflowing with friends and family including many of our very excited Year 1 students. The service truly reflected the Bride and Grooms love for each other and for our Lord Jesus. Miss Hung looked elegant and stunning in her dress, the music was wonderful and the afternoon tea after the service was delicious!
We wish Mr and Mrs Sun all the best and God's richest blessings as they begin their new life together.
Last Friday Year 1 had a very exciting visit from the Forestville Fire Brigade. Four firemen gave a great presentation on fire safety using lots of visual aids and demonstrations. This included learning about good and bad fires. (Naturally birthday candles were considered good!). They also shared information about their role in the community and showed us their truck full of interesting equipment. They reinforced fire safety rules such as:
1. never play with matches
2. ring 000 if there is dangerous fire
3. go to the fireman if he comes to help you
They also taught us special slogans to remember if we are caught in a dangerous fire - “Crawl down low and go go go” and “Stop Drop Cover Roll”. The children had LOTS of questions.
One of the fireman dressed with the full oxygen tank, face mask and
gloves to talk with the children. This was to help children learn even
though he sounded and looked "scary" he was there to help them.
For parents here are some important reminders:
1. install smoke alarms in your home
2. replace smoke alarm batteries when you change the clocks for daylight saving
3. teach children how to call 000 and give their home address - but never to do it for fun
4. have an evacuation plan
5. children were told to meet at your letterbox and never to re-enter a burning building
Enjoy the photos. We are very grateful to Forestville Fire Brigade for their willingness to teach our children such important lessons.
Covenant recently introduced Early Childhood as an elective for students. One of the great advantages of having a Preschool to Year 12 school is the students doing this course can gain practical experience by crossing over the playground. The Early Childhood students have been visiting Kindy classes.
One exercise was to help the Kindy students write a sentence about a picture they had drawn. Another was where they had to find out how the students felt when they started school and did a drawing to express their ideas. Then they had to express how they feel now. They did this by making a face on a biscuit and thoroughly enjoyed eating it!!!
If your child comes home and tells you they went in a police car today, don't worry! As part of learning about workers who serve our community, Senior Constable Lynne Kennedy, a Youth Liaison Officer from Chatswood Police Station, visited Infants. Constable Kennedy answered children's questions and let them try out the police car and hat. They learnt all about the roles of different types of police officers as well as how kids can help them to do their job. We are grateful for her time and the willingness of NSW Police Force to serve our school in this way
When children come home and tell you they had fairybread at school you would normally think it was a party. Yet 1N's teacher Mrs Newton used this very popular children's food to teach her class procedure. Yes even with fairybread there is a correct procedure to follow. We all know the sprinkles will not stick to the bread before you spread some margarine or butter.
Teaching young children procedural writing is much easier when you combine it with fun and food. Mrs Newton's 1N class learnt to write a procedural text for making a banana smoothie. As you can see it looks like the class not only learnt something but enjoyed the results of their lesson
On Tuesday 27 of the 39 new students joining Year 1 to Year 6 next year were welcomed to Covenant for an orientation day. After a brief tour of the Junior School they joined their buddies in the classrooms. For some children this was their first time at school and for others it was a chance to catch up with good friends. A lunch was also provided to give over 20 new parents a chance to meet.
On Wednesday 30 of the 35 new students joining Year 7 in High School had their orientation day. Current Year 6 students also had the chance to tour and experience the High School with the new students.
The school is growing as more families discover "Covenant is worth a closer look". Well done and thank you to all the buddies. We look forward to welcoming these students back next year.
Orientation day is a chance for kids to experience a morning of Big School in preparation for next year. Today a wonderful group of young people discovered more about Covenant and Kindergarten. For some it is quite familiar as they are in Transition here and for others it was all new. The morning included story reading, colouring in, building with blocks and singing. For parents it was a chance to meet other parents over a morning tea and be entertained by a musical production of Jonah Man Jazz.
Plans for the future development of Covenant were recently unveiled during a fundraising dinner at Miramare Gardens at Terrey Hills. It was a nice change to be told of major rebuilding in the infants department while being musically entertained by members of the student body, and amid the lure of three courses of food.
About 130 parents, staff, and supporters of the school were reassured by MC Simon Higgins that the multi-million dollar price tag for the building work wouldn't be collected then and there.
If that was the primary aim, the Covenant crew was off to an ordinary start with cost for the evening coming in at a warm and fuzzy $20-a-head.
Testimony to the popularity of the event was that tables spilled onto the balcony. And yes, that was a tent we were sitting under.
There was a donation element to the night but it was not aligned with pressure. And we were told there were two ways to donate: financially and by word-of-mouth, telling people about enrolling in this great school.
Someone said the ticket price was kept low so anyone could come to enjoy being part of the Covie community.
The important things of which my wife and I were reminded were the sense of welcoming, the feeling of community, and that this school honours the Lord Jesus Christ.
We were there for the common reason of ensuring the best future for our children and were shown a bold road map on how we can help achieve this.
Hats off to the makers of the DVD which will give parents considering the school a taste of what is on offer.
Thanks also to the Hills Flowers people for donating flowers and to Suzanne Bennett for the organisation.
Last Thursday the Infants children participated in the annual Sports Fun day at Warringah oval. It was a very fun day indeed! K-2 children all participated in a short running race along with sack and three-legged races. Throughout the day we saw some exceptional talent! It was wonderful to have the Thursday Transition children participate in the fun day activities for the first time. They showed off their amazing skills throughout the day. We finished the day with some tabloid events including egg and spoon races, parachute games, hockey and frisbee discus. It was particularly heartening to see the children encourage each other and celebrate the achievements of all involved in the day. A special thanks to all the parents who helped make the day run smoothly and the Infants teachers who enthusiastically ran each event
