Fund Raising for Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia

Tuesday, March 24, 2009
Last Thursday morning Covenant Christian School was filled with the delightful smell of bacon and eggs cooking on the barbeque. Mr. Smithies and the Student Council sold bacon and egg rolls and hash browns to the high school students. The money that was raised is being sent to a Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia to support the hospital and a family from a local Sydney church who run the midwifery college there.

In Ethiopia, alone, there are an estimated 100,000 women suffering with untreated fistula, and another 9,000 women who develop fistula each year. Due to poor health standards many girls who give birth develop a fistula which can lead to permanent damage of her internal organs. The hospital is able to treat women with this ailment, their cure rate is over 90%.

Thank you to everyone who supported the this cause. Get ready for more BBQ breakfasts!

Valentines flowers raise money for bushfire victims

Friday, February 13, 2009
Two days back from Christmas Holidays and Student Council got together and decided that a great fundraiser for the school would be to sell flowers on Valentine's Day. That all sounded great except that Valentine's Day was only 9 days away.

We began by pricing flowers and formulating a plan to get 150 - 200 flowers out during home class on Friday 13th (perhaps not the best date for flower giving - but that wasn't going to stop us). So word got out and the money and messages started rolling in. It soon took off and next thing we knew, it was Thursday afternoon (the day before) and we needed to write up 150 messages. Friday morning was hectic. There was a lot of ribbon, a lot of messages, a lot flowers and lot of love in the air. We organised each message to be attached to a flower and placed them in home class groups.

At last, the bell rang and out the student council went armed with a multitude of flowers. It was a great day. We raised around $500 which we decided would go toward supporting victims of the bushfires. Thanks to everyone who supported, especially Mrs. O'Sullivan who decide to buy every flower we had left over.

High School students visit Sydney homeless

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

On Tuesday November 25th the whole of year 10 went into the city for the day. We went to a suburb in the inner-city: Woolloomooloo. There, we visited an organization called Hope Street. HopeStreet help with the homelessness, long-term unemployment and many more other things. While we were there we went for a walk around with these amazing guys who used to be homeless and who had a very bad drug addiction.

Our guide turned his life around and now works with Hope Street to help others who are in difficult situations. His was an amazing story to hear.

This visit to HopeStreet made me realise that with the help of God and willing Christians, people in need are being served in all situations, no matter how bad it is.  On our walk, we got to see first-hand some of the living conditions of Sydney’s disadvantaged.

After our walk, we sat down with one guy who helps out at HopeStreet and we learnt more about why people become homeless and what we can do about it. Many of us were surprised at how many young people and women were homeless in Sydney.

This was an amazing day! It was hard to see the desperate situations that some people live in, or hear about what they do to just get by. But I think that by seeing and learning more about these things, it lets more fortunate people like us know what we can do to stop this.

It has made me realise that suffering and hardship doesn’t just happen in third world countries, but is also happening right on our front doorstep.

If we start changing things right here, perhaps this movement for change will continue on to the rest of the world where people suffer.

It was a great day and it really impacted on the way that I think.

Those in Need Week

Wednesday, November 21, 2007
Last week Junior School had a special week called “Those in Need Week”. We learnt about other people

who are in need around the world, in particular about our sponsor child, Rachel, from the Philippines. We also learnt how to practically help others. Part of this learning was fundraising for Rachel, so each child in Junior School brought $2 to contribute to Rachel’s sponsorship.

With the help of Mrs Ruth-Mary Smith, we created a Filipino style art mural and the whole of Junior School placed their money on it to create more art of their own.

Everyone learnt a great deal and it is summed up by the following bible verse that we learnt:

"If we have all we need and see someone in need, we must have pity on that person. Children, you show your love for others by truly helping them." 1 John 3:17-18

Thanks to Mrs Holman, Mrs Kohlhoff and Mrs Noble for all their help in organising the week.
