Former student talks about OM

Friday, August 22, 2008
Donna Kane was a student at Covenant for 13 years. She came back to school to talk with Year 8 students about her experiences working for the Christian organisation OM (Operation Mobilisation) refurbishing their Logos Hope ship. It was described as a very gutsy talk. The kids were so attentive because her story was well told and was very relevant to them.

Mikaela Gattari and Ed Anstee of Year 8 wrote this report...

On Thursday the 7th of August Year 8 came together to listen to ex-student, Donna Kane, talk about her life. She gave her testimony and also shared her current involvement in mission work through Operation Mobilisation.

Donna's testimony was very challenging. Donna told us of the troubles and perils she faced as a young girl. She was teased, from a very young age, and later diagnosed with depression and experienced frequent anxiety attacks. The way that Donna retained her faith through this time was really encouraging. So much had happened and it was easy to live at home, under the comfortable umbrella of family. Donna had never been away from her family for long periods of time, so when an opportunity came up for her to travel overseas and work for a Christian mission, her first thoughts were “No”. She didn't want to leave home and travel to a place that was unknown and unfamiliar. She eventually got persuaded to go (mainly through God’s nudging) and so she did. She travelled to Croatia and worked for a few days to refit the Logos Hope, the new ship for Operation Mobilisation.

Once her trip had ended she returned home to the open arms of family and friends. But she felt her time on the ship was not over, and that God had called her there for a reason, so she returned for another eight months on the ship. She had changed from the insecure young girl into  a brave young woman.

Donna told us about the ways we can help the mission, Operation Mobilisation. She talked to us about the ship Doulos and how it is coming to Sydney from the 22 of August to the 7th of September. On the ship you can meet the multicultural crew, go to the Christian bookshop, take a tour and relax at the cafe. Donna spoke openly to Year 8 about the things she believed in and we enjoyed it immensely. The talk gave Year 8 a lot to think about, and we congratulate Donna  for having the courage to share some of her experiences with us.
